Speaking Techniques That Sell - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Speaking Techniques That Sell - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career How attentive are others to what you have to say? As I observed the speaker deliver his message, it appeared he had taken lessons. Compared to previous talks, the latest delivery flowed better and included specific points for the audience to remember. However, the entire speech was over-acted; the arm motions appeared exaggerated, and the choice of words were too strong for the message he was attempting to make. In short, I couldnât âbuy-inâ to what was being said. The simple truth is when you do not excel or are a newbie in a particular area, just be yourself. People buy you before they buy what you have to offer. By coming across as genuine and not play-acting, you stand with integrity. This is the essence of building your personal brand. Should you be fairly new at business and arenât quite certain how to begin a conversation, the best place to start is to ask others how they got started. When on your initial appointments, ask the people with whom you are meeting how they too got started. Ask what they did prior to their business and what motivated them to take the plunge. This line of questioning is more heartfelt allowing for a more in-depth dialogue between two humans versus a salesperson trying to get money from someone. In the process you will make a friend as well as a client. And as you uncover the answers to even more detailed questions, you will find the secretive wants and desires revealed. This is an area that most are unable to reach and will distinguish you from the pack. When you approach business in this manner, others take note that you are quite different from everyone else. Your genuine interest and caring become abundantly clear moving your likeability meter up several notches. As your meter reading increases so does the trust factor. And when your trust factor advances and holds steady, as a newer businessperson, you do not need to know a thing about sales but people will ask permission to buy from you. And you be more advanced in your field, you should easily be able to help new potential clients immediately feel comfortable with you. Approaching appointments as if you are about to make a new friend is what makes a small percentage of salespeople successful. On the first appointment, rather than concentrating on everything you have to offer, focus instead on everything that concerns your client-to-be. In this way you will be able to provide more options when it comes time for presenting a proposal, and your odds for making the sale will substantially increase. By the time you get to know one another fairly well and believe you have answered all questions to your prospective clientâs satisfaction, you will see a steady increase in the percentage of sales made. Following this unique approach, you will be building momentum for repeat business, good word of mouth buzz in the marketplace, referrals and testimonials â" the definition of the Smooth Sale! On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Spur Employees Into Being More Loyal and Productive
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Spur Employees Into Being More Loyal and Productive You might remember a time when you knew not only the names of everyone in your department or company, but details about their likes and and dislikes. You knew who hated coffee, who played in a jazz band and who was training for a marathon. Nowadays, however, youre lucky to remember an employees last name. Your department or company is growing and that means there are a lot more people on the payroll. You dont have time to sit around chit-chatting with every employee, and why should you? Isnt your time better spent ensuring the business is successful so they all have jobs? The problem is that as you grow more distant, so do your workers. They begin to feel like you dont care about them, so why should they care about you or the company? That soon leads to productivity slowing, competitiveness dwindling and employees leaving. In order to get loyalty, you must give it, saysDov Baron, a leadership expert and author of Fiercely Loyal: How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent. The biggest mistake companies make is not understanding that. Current statistics show that employees are now changing careers every four years and the average millennial worker is staying put only 1.2 to 2.4 years. Baron says that when leaders can show moreloyaltyto their workers, employees are more likely to stay around for up to eight years. Since it can cost up to two times what a departing employee earns annually to replace him or her, it can add up to significant savings if employees stick around longer. Baron says its possible to develop fiercely loyal teams that are more productive and competitive whenscaling a business, but first it begins with dispelling the notion that a paycheck or bonuses are enough to keep workers loyal and focused on helping you grow the business. That loyalty, he emphasizes, comes from showing theyre more than a commodity that can be gotten rid of just as easily as tossing out the garbage. Of course, many start-ups and even large companies argue they would never do such a thing, and claim they value every worker. They may hang posters on the workplace walls, proclaiming the companys culture is focused on breaking down silos and valuing input from everyone. The truth, however, is that the leadership doesnt really follow through, so silos still exist. Its no surprise, Baron says, that employees arent loyal, get frustrated and leave. If youre starting to see greater turnover and realize that in scaling the business youve lost touch with who employees really are then its time to make some changes. While it may seem overwhelming to add one more thing to your to do list, Baron says its not that difficult to get started. For example, if you want to make a change this week, heres what you need to do: Sit down.Thats right take a load off. Disconnect from whatever devices are nearby and instead just connect with yourself. Why are you in the business? Why are you a leader? Why does this job or this company matter to you? This is where you think deeply about the real purpose behind why you do what you do. Think about challenges. What obstacles (read more here)

Interview with the industry on-set with Elliot PurvisÂ
Interview with the industry on-set with Elliot Purvis The faces of the film industry plastered across our magazines and newspapers are only a fraction of the collective effort that goes into making a motion picture. Behind the scenes is the crew â" tireless cameramen, production assistants, film loaders, make-up artists, boom operators, the list goes on. In this article we chat with Elliot Purvis, a 2nd Assistant Camera Technician who has worked on an impressive list of films including Guardians of the Galaxy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Maleficent. What exactly do you do? What does an average day look like? I am a 2nd Assistant Camera technician on films, television and commercials. An average day consists of many different jobs: assisting in setting up camera shots and maintaining a workflow that delivers the footage captured throughout the day. What you are working on at the minute? Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (the film adaptation of JK Rowlingâs book about the magical creatures in Harry Potterâs wizarding world, set to come out next year) How did you get started in the industry? A family member who works in another part of the industry got my foot in the door by getting me a trainee job. After this, I got on the Guild of Camera Technicians trainee scheme. How do you find new work? I get work through 1st Assistant Camera technicians requesting me for jobs. What inspired you to work in technical film production? My love and passion for films has always made me want to work in the industry. What was your first job like? Where was it? My first job was on a film in Morocco. It was hard work in extreme temperatures, but it was also a very rewarding experience. Best part of the job? Worst? The best part of the job is working as part of a team. I get to work with some of the most talented technicians and artists in this country. There is very little that I dont enjoy about the job. The long working hours and the impact this has on my non-working life can be a difficult aspect of working in the industry. Whatâs been your favourite job so far? Guardians of the Galaxy (the 2014 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name). On this project I got to work with great people and on fantastic sets. In your opinion, what distinguishes a good cameraman from an average one? A good balance between technical ability and social skills. This is a collaborative industry that relies on colleagues working together as a team. Understanding other peoples roles makes a good cameraman. I imagine a film set can be an exciting, if not rather dangerous, place to workâ¦have there been any accidents on any sets youâve worked on? I havent been involved or seen any accidents at work myself. Of course, like any other industry, there will always be certain risks. This is why there are strict health and safety measures in place on all the films Ive worked on. Any advice for anyone wishing to follow in your footsteps? Be prepared to work hard and start at the bottom of the pile. Its a very closed and small industry in terms of people that work in it. Enthusiasm and a keenness to work matched with technical ability would see anyone go far in the business. Image Source; Image Source; Image Source

Cybersecurity Advice for the Workplace CareerMetis.com
Cybersecurity Advice for the Workplace Source â" DepostiPhotos.comNo matter what industry you work in, protecting your data is critical. Though your company likely has cybersecurity policies set in place, itâs ultimately up to you to ensure your own protection. Failing to safeguard your personal information could leave you, your company, and your customers vulnerable to a cyber-attack and potentially identity theft.Depending on the severity of the cyber-attack, it could end up costing you and your company a large amount of money. Just last year, employee error and negligence accounted for more than 40% of data breaches. While this number may not seem that high, itâs a number that could virtually be eradicated with carefully executed precautions put into place. Though managing your cybersecurity can oftentimes be difficult in a workplace setting, it doesnât have to be.Why Does it Matter?evalYou may be wondering why any of this should matter to you since itâs on the company if a data breach happens anyways⦠isnâ t it? Well, in most cases itâs actually not. When you risk the exposure of sensitive information that is stored on your devices or in your account, youâre not just putting yourself at risk, but your customers as well. This is a particularly strong issue for the healthcare and financial industries where records tend to be more sensitive in nature.evalIf a company should conduct an investigation into the data breach and it is revealed that an error on your part was the cause, you could be seriously reprimanded or fired. This is becausedata breaches cost companies millions of dollars in damagesannuallyand often damage their reputation. It can take years for a company to repair this damage.Protecting Your DataAs mentioned previously, itâs ultimately up to you to practice healthy cybersecurity habits. The best place to start is by familiarizing yourself with the policies your company has set in place. You may have signed a nondisclosure or confidentiality agreement upon being hired . You should be able to find a copy of this agreement and the entire cybersecurity policy laid out in the employee handbook. If you do not have a handbook available, talk to your IT department. Your IT department is a great resource for any questions or concerns you may have. Never be afraid to ask them a question even if you think it may not be worth their time. Theyâre happy to help now, rather than down the road when an issue has already presented itself. When it comes to your work devices, itâs important that you care about them the same way that you would your personal devices. Take precautions in the way that you handle them. This starts from the beginning when you set them up. When you first receive a work phone, laptop, or other devices, follow the setup instructions that your department gives you.Make sure that you have everything installed that you need such as software, programs, and specific privacy settings. When an update becomes available for these, install them so you have the most up to date versions. Regularly, an update is released when companies will have found a flaw in the security settings and made the necessary repairs to ensure your safety.Additionally, you should write down the serial numbers of these devices in case it is ever stolen so you can provide the police with this information.PasswordsevalAfter you receive your device, youâll need to create a password for your account. Make sure that it is both strong and unique in nature. The more complex that you can make it, the better your first line of defense will be in the event of a cyber-attack. When it comes to passwords, donât skimp out on making one by using simple phrases or names. Instead, take the time to create one that uses a variety of both lower and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols.Never leave a device unlocked, especially when it contains sensitive data or company/client information. Itâs crucial to set up a strong password, but itâs wise to also add in a stronger layer of defense on top of that such as a two-factor authentication process. This works by notifying you on another device that the login attempt was made. Sometimes it may also ask you to input a security code number. Once you receive this, you can either verify that it was you trying to sign in or deny the request.Prioritizing and Managing DataNo matter what industry you work in, itâs likely that youâll have private information that needs to stay within the company or even to yourself. Because of this, itâs important that you find proper methods of storing and managing your data to avoid it ending up in the wrong hands. Exposing this information is to competitors, cybercriminals, or the public would put your company in jeopardy.Confidential data is different than private data. Though itâs important to keep both secure, confidential data is to be regarded with the highest regard to importance. Examples of each include:Confidential Data The best way to protect conf idential data is by encrypting it. This process uses a secret code to scramble the data so that it cannot be read by anyone who does not have the code.Staying in line with encryption policies, itâs wise to refrain from sending confidential information over email. Instead, use a file transfer system that properly transmits and disposes of any records after sending them to the recipient. When managing data, you should also keep business transactions, especially those with clients, on a need-to-know basis. If the information is necessary to a case, then it is okay for them to disclose it to your company. However, if it is not necessary do not ask for it or encourage them to share this sensitive data. This also works vice versa. One of the most important things to remember to do is backing up your data on a regular basis. Itâs likely that your IT department has a process for this in place already, but if not, inquire with them about storage options that may be available for you. This could include an external hard drive or a company cloud storage. If for any reason you should need to terminate your work device, make sure to wipe it clean to a factory setting option before handing it over.evalManaging Cyber Security Outside the OfficeFor various reasons you may find yourself working outside of the office. Whether you have a work from home arrangementset up, are traveling for business, or just want to check your work email in a cafe you need to be extra cautious. While it may seem safe to conduct work in these settings, itâs difficult to predict the safety of the digital environment youâll be working off of.Thankfully, there are a few tips you can keep in mind when working offsite to ensure your cyber safety. You may find benefit in utilizing a secure VPNwhile browsing the Internet. It will help protect and encrypt your data during your session, no matter where you are.Hotels, airports, and cafes are notorious for using unsecured networks. Try to avoid these pl aces if you are not using a VPN by searching for a secure network. Unsecured networks can leave the information that you are transmitting over the network susceptible to theft by criminal eavesdroppers who are also on the network. You will know if it is secured if it asks for a password or login.During this time, you should also refrain from visiting any sites that store your personally identifiable information or require a credit card for purchases. If you truly must go on to one of these sites, verify its legitimacy by checking for SSL or secure sockets layer.evalDo so by looking at the URL bar of the site. Be wary if there is an s missing in the âhttps://â section of the site address. Also, if a payment is required, make sure there is a padlock icon in the URL which signifies it is safe to input your payment method of choice.Avoiding ScamsCompanies are one of the most vulnerable victims when it comes to scams, the most common being phishing emails. This is when an outside sou rce sends an email to you typically pretending to be an executive inside the company asking for information. Their hope is that youâll fall for the phony email and open it. Within that email, they will likely ask you to reveal sensitive information to them or download a link. These downloads contain malicious spyware that can infect your devices with viruses. Be cautious and think twice before downloading anything to your device.Though a scam email can be hard to notice at first glance, there are a few signs you can be on the lookout for.Spelling and Grammar Mistakes â" read through the entire email and subject line. If there are several spelling or grammar mistakes, think twice about taking action on the email.Strange Sender Address â" Though the email address may look like it came from an inside employee or corporate executive, itâs important to actually verify this before responding by checking directly with the person. If it is not legitimate, there will often be a letter missing or a symbol added but will still look close to the authentic address.Request for Immediate Action â" If the email is making you feel uncomfortable, thatâs a clear sign to avoid it, but especially if it contains a strong call to action. This might be something like âsend me money now,â âItâs an emergency,â or âsend me your password now or elseâ¦â These kinds of emails rarely end well. They Donât Call You by Your Name â" Though your boss could have just been sending an email in a rush, itâs more than likely that they would typically start the email with âHi {YOUR NAME}â. If not, it could be a first warning sign.
